Or in this way:

a very experienced or long-serving person

be superior to

a source of valuable material
Let us digest the wisdom of Waqi' advising his beloved student, Imam Syafi'e in having a proper manner of seeking knowledge, the light of life:
شكَوْتُ إِلَى وَقِعٍ سُوْءَ حِفْظى
فَأَرْشَـدَنِي إلى تَرْكِ المَعاصِي
وَأَخْـبَرَني بِـأَن العِلمَ نُـورٌ
ونُـورُ اللهِ لا يُهدَي للعَاصى
which means:
I (Imam Syafi'e) told Waqi' regarding my weak memorization. He then asked me to leave the ma'siah off. He told me that the 'ilm (knowledge) is light, and thus Allah won't endows the light for those who commit the ma'siah
